What inspired you to join our company 30 years ago, and how has that initial motivation evolved over time?
In April 1994, I had the privilege of being interviewed by Ms. Priti Paul, a figure whose optimism about the Apeejay Group’s future left a lasting impression on me. Her enthusiasm and forward-thinking perspective were palpable, and it was evident that she was deeply committed to the company’s vision.
What stood out most to me was not just the insights she shared about the company’s potential but also the personal touch she extended. After our discussion, Ms. Paul walked me to the door—a gesture that, though simple, spoke volumes about her character and the supportive culture she championed.
That moment was pivotal. It was clear to me that the Apeejay Group was a place where personal engagement and forward-looking values were integral to the organizational ethos. This experience solidified my decision to join the company, and it was the beginning of what would become a long and fulfilling journey with the Apeejay Group.
Can you share some significant milestones or accomplishments from your journey with the company over the past 30 years?

In 1998-99, under Ms. Priti Paul’s leadership, Apeejay Shipping (formerly Surrendra Overseas Limited) aimed for ISO 9002 Certification, a significant international standard. I played a key role in preparing the ISO manuals and completed the Lead Assessor Course with the American Bureau of Shipping. Representing the company in Jakarta, Indonesia, I addressed questions from the ISO authorities. We passed the audit on our first attempt and became the first Indian shipping company to receive the ISO 9002 Certification.
How have you seen the corporate culture change and develop during your time here, and what role have you played in shaping it?
Our organization has undergone significant change, with new hires introducing diverse experiences and work styles that have progressively replaced the previous, slower methods. I have actively mentored numerous new employees across the Shipping and Group companies, assisting them in understanding company expectations and providing support as needed.

What do you believe has been the key to your longevity and success within the organization?
Throughout my tenure with the company, I have consistently observed its commitment to good governance, which has assured me of its focus on sustainable growth. This commitment has encouraged me to remain with the organization. Furthermore, the company’s dedication to providing equal opportunities for performance and development has been instrumental in helping me achieve my professional goals.
Over the years, how have you adapted to changes in technology, industry trends, and market dynamics in your role?
I joined the Mumbai office in April 1994, fresh from completing my B.Com and GNIIT in Computers. My IT background made it easy for me to navigate technological changes and stay ahead of industry trends. As I took on increasing responsibilities and engaged with a growing network of colleagues, I gained valuable insights into market dynamics and the broader business landscape.
Could you please share your experience working with the Paul family over the past 30 years?
My initial experience was primarily with Ms. Priti Paul. It was later that I was introduced to Mr. Jit Paul during his visit to Mumbai. I used to escort him to the airport every time he was in Mumbai. On one occasion, while traveling to the airport, we discussed Mr. Warren Buffett, and Mr. Jit Paul shared that Mr. Buffett was not just buying stocks but buying companies. I later met Mrs. Shirin Paul, Ms. Priya Paul, and Mr. Karan Paul. With the expanding Paul family, I also met Mr. Kadiri and Mr. Vaidyanathan, who are thorough gentlemen. Recently, I met Ms. Indrani Dasgupta Paul and assisted her and the children at Four Seasons. After helping them with check-in, she asked the children to thank me, which impressed me a lot. My most recent interaction was with Ms. Priya Paul during the Long Service Award ceremony, where she was an excellent host, ensuring everyone had refreshments and even arranging snacks for a person who was fasting.
What advice would you offer to new employees based on your extensive experience and knowledge gained during your tenure?
My advice is to maintain honesty and diligence, and to make the most of the opportunities presented to you. If you demonstrate a strong willingness to perform and grow, the leaders of each unit within the organization are committed to supporting your advancement.

How have you balanced personal and professional growth throughout your career, and what strategies have you used to continue learning and evolving?
Balancing personal and professional life can be challenging, and over time, my priorities naturally shifted more towards my professional responsibilities. This shift often means dedicating more time and effort to work, sometimes at the expense of personal time.
A standout moment in my career was being nominated for the “Lead Auditor Course” by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This opportunity allowed me to conduct in-house audits of our ISO manuals and procedures at the Kolkata office. Additionally, I participated in the final audit conducted on the “APJ ANGAD” in Jakarta, Indonesia, where we successfully passed with no major non-conformities. This achievement led us to become the first ISO 9002 certified shipping company in India at that time.
Throughout my journey, the company has supported my professional growth by sponsoring various short courses, including those on team building, stress management, and developing interpersonal skills. These experiences have not only enriched my career but also helped me maintain a balance between personal and professional life.
Can you recall any challenging moments or setbacks you faced during your time here, and how did you overcome them?
A significant setback in my career occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic when we were required to work from home. I was used to commuting to the office daily and engaging with colleagues across various group companies. Fortunately, as conditions improved, we were able to return to the office, and the team resumed work with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
As you celebrate this significant milestone, what are your hopes and aspirations for the future, both for yourself and for the company?

Over the past 30 years, the Apeejay brand has flourished under the visionary leadership of Ms. Priti Paul, Ms. Priya Paul, and Mr. Karan Paul. From our flagship ventures in shipping, real estate, and hotels to our exciting expansions into warehousing, logistics, bookstores, and even Flury’s now in Mumbai, we’ve come a long way.
To all employees, I wish you a rewarding and successful career with Apeejay, no matter where you are or which company you’re with. Remember, we’re all part of a big, supportive family!
