By Mr. Singampalli Purna Chandra Rao.
You started your journey in 1978 as a Helper in the Maintenance Department. How did you navigate your early days in the company, and what were some of the challenges you faced?
My early days as a helper in the maintenance department were tough. Safety equipment was limited, and working near the blast furnace at Steel Crete, especially in the summer heat, made it even harder.
One memorable challenge was when a crane operator accidentally left a load meant for the blast furnace. I quickly took charge, climbed a steel pole bare-handed, and spent about three hours doing the necessary maintenance to fix the issue.
Mr. Rao, you’ve had a career spanning over 33 years with the company. Can you share what motivated you to stay with the company for such a long time?
Throughout my career, my own curiosity and eagerness to learn new things have been my biggest motivators. I’ve always had a personal interest in working with electrical equipment, and the company’s policies have also played a key role in guiding and encouraging my growth. This combination of passion and support has kept me motivated every step of the way.
Over the years, you moved up from Helper to Technician, and then to Senior Technician in the Engineering Department. What were some key milestones or moments that helped you achieve these promotions?
My seniors, especially Chief Engineer Mr. P. C. Pradhan, have guided and supported me in my career. He recognized my efforts and promoted me from helper to technician, and finally to my current position as Senior Technician.
In 1990, you transitioned to The Park Visakhapatnam’s Engineering Department. What inspired that move, and how did it contribute to your growth as a professional?
The person who inspired me the most in my career was my brother, Mr. S.S. Prasad Rao. Before me, he worked at the hotel as a Senior Supervisor. He not only guided me throughout my career but also shared the values of The Park and the legacy of Mr. Surrendra Paul. His guidance has been a constant source of motivation for me.

Can you share some memorable incidents or experiences you had while working with the late Mr. Jit Paul and Mr. Surrendra Paul?
Mr. Surrendra Paul was truly an inspiring person, and I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to interact with him. He was always approachable, with no barriers between him and the employees. His simplicity, support, and willingness to help stood out. Even with an employee union in place, he never tried to dissolve it and always supported us. His leadership and kindness had a lasting impact on all of us, and I will always be grateful for his guidance.
Having been with the company for over three decades, you’ve witnessed natural calamities and a pandemic that significantly affected the hotel. Can you share some important and striking incidents from those challenging times?
Over the past three decades, the hotel has faced many challenges, especially due to cyclones and natural disasters, like the Hud-Hud cyclone in 2014. During that time, I stayed at the hotel for three days with Mr. Ajit Singh Garcha to help get the hotel back in shape after the damage caused by the cyclone. It was a team effort, and together we managed to restore operations.
In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, I was grateful to receive half of my salary, which really helped me through a tough time. Throughout my career, I’ve faced ups and downs, but the company has always been very supportive, and that has meant a lot to me.
As a Senior Technician, you must have mentored younger colleagues. What advice or lessons do you pass on to them?
As a senior technician, I always tell my younger colleagues, “If you can’t work with this company, you won’t be able to work with any company.” I encourage them to believe in their hard work and dedication because I truly believe that the company will recognize their efforts over time.
Looking back at your 33 years with the company, what are some of the most rewarding moments you’ve experienced in your role?
I’ve been fortunate to receive appreciation from my seniors for my dedication and hard work. One of the highlights of my career so far was receiving the Long Service Award from Ms. Shirin Paul for completing 20 years with the company. I’m also looking forward to being recognized by Ms. Priya Paul for my 10 years of service in 2024. Early in my career, I was honored with a Merit Employee award, which motivated me to continue giving my best.
From working with Mr. Jit Paul and Mr. Surrendra Paul to now interacting with Ms. Priya Paul, the current Chairperson of Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels, can you share some notable experiences you’ve had working with or interacting with her?
It was an honor to interact with Chairperson Ms. Priya Paul at the LSA Award ceremony. Just like Mr. Surrendra Paul, she has a leadership style that values long-term employees, always remembering those who have been with the company for decades.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting their career in the engineering or maintenance field?
To the younger generation, I would say: Be patient, stay healthy, and make an effort to learn something new every day. Developing loyalty to the company is key, as it will help you build a strong foundation for your career.
How do you unwind after a busy day at work, and do you have any routines or rituals that help you relax?
In my free time, I visit the church and sing devotional songs, which bring me a sense of inner peace. I also make sure to spend quality time with my family on my days off, as it helps me relax and recharge.
